Mai Mahiu Catholic Church, The Smallest Church in Kenya Built in 1942, by italian Prisoners of War (IPOW)

The remarkable Mai Mahiu Catholic Church, often referred to as the smallest church in Kenya, offers a thought-provoking experience that transcends its petite size.

This charming place of worship, built by Italian prisoners of war in 1942, is steeped in history and offers visitors a glimpse into the past.

Join us as we delve into the intriguing details of this remarkable gem.

Unveiling the Quirky Side of Jesus

While exploring the mysteries surrounding Christianity and religion, we can’t help but wonder about the lesser-known aspects of Jesus’ life.

Did the Bible mention His rebellious youth years?

We envision playful exchanges where Jesus playfully retorts to Joseph’s instructions, highlighting His sense of humor and human nature.

Such ponderings remind us that even the divine can appreciate a good laugh.

Mai Mahiu Catholic Church, the smallest church in Kenya got me thinking so much about Christianity and religion.

My mind is blowing off so many questions which for one I know are rhetorical or rather do not need any answer but at the same time awe-inspiring.

Case in Point

We know about Jesus as a baby and when He is an adult but does the Bible ever mention His rebellious youth years?

“Jesus, go feed the donkey!” “You are not my real father” He replies😂.

Then the ground shakes a little and a voice comes down from the sky:

“Do what your stepfather says you little brat😅”.

Sometimes it’s easy for us Christians to take ourselves just a wee bit too seriously and I like to think that Jesus had at least a sense of humor like I always wonder how Jesus used to tell His Apostles He is gonna die.

It is written in the Bible but again was He like:

“Relax😒, I will be back in 3 days top”

or was it like I’m the son of God and they would be like

No Way!”

and He would be like

“YAHWEH😏”.

It also gets to my thinking why Jesus did not have as many female disciples, and then it comes to me that maybe Jesus foresaw that they would be too much.

For instance, Jesus would tell them

Tomorrow we are going to Galilee”

and they would be

“You could have told us earlier, we have nothing to wear😂😂, and I think we might as well pass🙅‍♀️.”

The Origins and Significance

Mai Mahiu Catholic Church’s origin story is closely tied to the events of World War II.

Constructed by Italian prisoners of war who were tasked with building a road, the chapel became a place of worship for the Catholic Italians who couldn’t reconcile their faith with the Anglican British colonizers.

This historical backdrop adds a layer of intrigue to the church’s humble architecture.

A Testament to Miniature Beauty

Measuring a mere 15x8ft., Mai Mahiu Catholic Church holds the distinction of being the smallest church in East Africa and possibly the entire continent.

Its intimate space, accommodating only 12 individuals during Mass, serves as a poignant symbol of the 12 apostles. Inside, visitors will find a single aisle adorned with three wooden benches on each side and a modest altar at the end.

Stained glass windows, filled with intricate circular pieces of colored glass, grace the walls, casting a mesmerizing play of light.
